Inspection and Testing

Inspection and testing ensure that industrial equipment and systems comply with safety standards, reducing the risk of accidents and protecting worker health.

Non-destructive testing (NDT) under NR-13, the Brazilian regulatory standard for boilers, pressure vessels and piping, is essential for verifying the integrity of equipment subject to pressure and heat and ensuring compliance with safety standards. Below are some of the main non-destructive tests specified under NR-13:

  • Visual Testing (VT): Visual testing involves a careful visual inspection of the equipment surface for visible defects such as cracks, fissures, corrosion and wear. It is the first step and can identify obvious problems.
  • Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT): Liquid penetrant testing is used to detect surface cracks and discontinuities in metallic materials. It involves applying a penetrant to the material surface, removing the excess and then applying a developer that reveals the discontinuities.
  • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT): Magnetic particle testing is used to detect surface and subsurface defects in ferromagnetic materials. It involves applying magnetic particles to the material surface and observing the magnetic flux patterns to identify discontinuities.
  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Ultrasonic testing uses high-frequency sound waves to measure wall thickness and detect internal defects such as cracks and inclusions. It is a valuable technique for assessing the wall thickness of pressure vessels.
  • Radiographic Testing (RT): Radiographic testing exposes the material to X-rays or gamma rays, producing a radiographic image that reveals internal discontinuities such as cracks, inclusions and defective welds.
  • Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT): This advanced ultrasonic technique uses an array of transducer elements to inspect materials more efficiently, enabling accurate defect detection and sizing.
  • Eddy Current Testing (ECT): Eddy current testing is used to detect surface cracks and variations in electrical conductivity in conductive materials. It is especially useful for inspecting tubes and metal surfaces.
  • Remote Visual Inspection (Video Borescope): Video borescope inspection uses a flexible optical device to inspect internal areas of equipment, such as piping and confined spaces, allowing defects or corrosion to be viewed.

NDT under NR-13 is performed by qualified, trained personnel following specific procedures in accordance with applicable standards. Regular inspections are vital to ensure equipment integrity and worker safety. Any defect found during testing must be documented and corrected before the equipment is placed in service.
